Review of Emma's Shadow (Skyggen af Emma)/ Crítica de La Sombra de Emma

Emma's Shadow (original title, Skyggen af Emma, 1988) is a Danish film that tells the story of a fake kidnapping conceived by eleven-year-old Emma, daughter of a wealthy and well-known family settled in Copenhage since the 1930's. Emma feels that she lacks attention by her family, and one day, decides to fake her own kidnapping, leaving a ransom note in their parent's car, where she was last seen. She walks alone through the city all day, until at night, she crashes into Malthe, a beggar. Emma, hurt on the knee, is taken care of by Malthe, who takes her to his place. He turns out to be a lovely man, and between them a true and innocent friendship is born. Emma had told him that she was a Russian princess prosecuted by bad people and together they live adventures of all kinds, always scaping from those who Emma said were the prosecuters.

I watched this film twice when I was eleven, and it really left a mark on my heart. The film is absolutely lovely, with a wondeful photograpy and the story described almost like poetry. The last scene, when Emma and Malthe meet again, maybe for the last time, can bring a great ordeal of tears to your eyes. I definetly give it a 10 out of 10.


La Sombra de Emma (Skyggen af Emma, 1988) es una película Danesa que relata el falso secuestro ideado por Emma, de 11 años de edad, la hja de una rica familia afincada en Copenhage desde los años 30. Emma siente que su familia no le dedica la atencion necesaria, y un día, decide falsear su propio secuestro, dejando una nota de rescate en el coche de sus padres, donde había sido vista por última vez. Pasea sola por la ciudad durante todo el día, hasta que por la noche, tropieza con Malthe, un mendigo. Emma, que se había lastimado la rodilla, recibe los cuidados de Mathe, que la lleva a su guarida. Malthe resulta ser un hombre amable, y entre ellos se forja una verdadera e inocente amistad. Emma le había contado que era una princesa rusa pereguida por gente mala, y juntos viven múltiples aventuras, siempre escapando de aquellos que supuestamente perseguían a Emma.


Esta película la vi dos veces cuando tenía 11 años, y dejó una marca en mi alma. El film es verdaderamente encantador, tiene una hermosa fotografía, y la historia se describe casi poéticamente. La última escena, cuando Emma y Malthe se reencuentran, quizás por última vez, puede haceros llorar como madalenas. Para mi, merece un 10.
